Looking around The Ship and Seal in Francis-next-the-Sea, Lady Beatrice spotted Perry in a booth in the back area of the pub. Daisy, having run ahead, was already on his lap by the time Lady Beatrice arrived at the wooden table.

“Sorry I’m a bit late. I wanted to walk, but I’ve been told yet again by DS Spicer that I’m not allowed to go off the estate on my own while they’re investigating the murder, so we had to wait for Jeff and the buggy to bring us here.”

Perry grinned.

He’d found it most amusing back in April when she’d had to be ferried between Francis Court and the village via the pedestrian access by Jeff, one of the security leads, using a security buggy (basically, a souped-up golf cart) to keep her safe from a potential killer. While appreciating that it had solved the issue of getting her quickly and safely in and out of Francis Court, she’d found it embarrassing and uncomfortable. Unlike Daisy, who, once she’d got used to it, had sat on Lady Beatrice’s knee, her head to one side, leaning into the wind with her tongue out, loving it.

Seeing her scowl, he said, “Well, at least it’s warm this time of year, Bea.”

“Indeed,” she muttered, scanning the room for Simon. She spotted him when Daisy jumped off Perry’s lap and ran towards the bar. The little dog danced around his feet as he made his way back to them, carrying a tray of drinks.

“Hi, Bea, I got you a gin and tonic. Is that okay?”

She nodded as he placed it in front of her.

“Same for you, Perry.” He handed him a large balloon glass, then picked up a pint of beer and three menus. Seating them down on the table in front of him, he handed the tray to Perry who put it on the shelf beside him. Simon slid menus to each of them, then finally gave in and bent down to fuss the whimpering Daisy by his side.

“Oh, I fancy the special,” Perry said. “Butternut squash risotto with sage, walnuts, and goat’s cheese.”

Lady Beatrice, her mouth watering, studied the menu. It all sounds so good. It never ceased to amaze her that they had such a high standard of cooking available to them in the unassuming pub in the village. Landlord Dylan Milton and his wife Janey had worked hard to find the right balance between serving good food and keeping the locals happy with a cosy bar and excellent beer. Although busy with tourists during the day, the evenings were more relaxed. And Dylan had a policy that Lady Beatrice was a particular fan of — no press allowed.

“I’m going to have the Salmon en Papillote with ginger and lime,” she said, licking her lips.

“Good choices,” Simon said, getting up. Gathering their menus, he headed to the bar to place their order.

“So how are you feeling now?” Perry asked. “Do you still think we should leave it to the police?”

“I honestly don’t know.
